Dundee Liberal Democrat Councillor Helen Dick today (25th February 2006) welcomed publication of a Guardian/ICM poll that has revealed that 63% of the population approve of new green taxes to discourage environmentally damaging behaviour.

The survey also found that 80% of people would back a proposal "for house builders by law to add £600 worth of things to every new house to make them more environmentally friendly, with the cost being added to the purchase price."

Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary said, "I am delighted to see that so many people are aware that we need more green taxation in order to protect our environment for the future. It is a pity that the government is not as progressive in its thinking as the public."

Here in Dundee, Cllr Dick, who is the City Council's Vice Convener of Environmental Services & Sustainability said, "This confirms what I have always believed - that the people of Britain appreciate the importance of environmental issues - even if the Labour government does not."
