Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Wednesday 4th October) welcomed news that Scottish Liberal Democrat MP John Barrett has challenged the New Labour Government to work to secure real agreement on tackling climate change ahead of a major G8 climate summit today.

Environment Ministers from the world's top 20 polluting nations are today meeting in Mexico in an attempt to move closer to an agreement on tackling climate change. Mr Barrett has challenged the Government and Environment secretary David Milliband MP to use the summit to follow through on recent pledges on the environment at Labour's Party conference last week.

John Barrett MP said, "We need more action from the Government than simply a succession of Ministers all telling us how important it is to tackle global warming. What we need is real action and agreement on a national and international level."

Locally, Dundee LibDem party secretary Michael Charlton said, "This summit offers the opportunity to try to get international consensus on tackling global warming. I applaud John Barrett's call for the Labour Government to put this issue at the top of its agenda."
