Cllr Helen Dick backs campaign for more subtitles on ITV

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Tuesday 3rd July) backed a campaign calling for ITV for letting down deaf and hard of hearing viewers by failing to provide enough subtitles.

Both the RNID, the largest charity representing the UK's 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people, and the Liberal Democrats are campaigning for ITV to provide greater subtitle provision in their programmes.

Don Foster MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said, "This is not a question of choice for the deaf and hard of hearing: subtitles are a fundamental service. If this service is not provided then they lose out.

"As one of the biggest broadcasters in the country there's no reason why ITV can't match or better what's on offer from its competitors."

Locally, here in Dundee, LibDem Councillor for Strathmartine Ward, Cllr Helen Dick said, "Television subtitles are a vital service for deaf and hard of hearing people. ITV and other broadcasters should make full and proper provision for deaf and hard of hearing people."
